French energy company TotalEnergies plans to install continuous methane monitoring systems at its production facilities in Azerbaijan by the end of 2025, a senior company official said.

Speaking in an interview, Jean-Luc Guiziou, TotalEnergies’ Senior Vice President for Exploration and Production in Europe, said the initiative is part of the company’s global strategy to cut methane emissions and support the energy transition.

“Methane reduction is a short-term priority,” he said. “We aim to reduce emissions by more than 80% by 2030 from 2020 levels, with a 50% target by 2025 — which we surpassed in 2024, reaching 55%.”

TotalEnergies now targets a 60% reduction by 2025 and plans to deploy over 13,000 continuous monitoring devices across all installations globally, including at its Absheron site in Azerbaijan.

“This large-scale deployment is a pioneering move for the industry,” Guiziou said, adding the company will continue working with Azerbaijani partners to share best practices in methane mitigation.
