Argentina seeks arrest of Iran’s Supreme Leader over 1994 bombing

Argentina’s prosecutor’s office has requested national and international arrest warrants for Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in connection with the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires, The Jerusalem Post reported.

Prosecutor Sebastián Basso submitted the request to federal judge Daniel Rafecas, seeking to investigate Khamenei’s possible involvement in the attack, which killed 85 people and injured more than 200 — the deadliest terror attack in Argentina’s history.

The move could further strain diplomatic ties between Buenos Aires and Tehran, the report said.

In April 2024, Argentina also issued an international arrest warrant for Iran’s interior minister, Ahmad Vahidi, over suspected links to the bombing.
