Armenia reaffirms readiness to deepen ties with the European Union

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the European Union. He made the statement during a meeting with European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on the sidelines of the 6th European Political Community summit in Tirana.
“Pashinyan praised the EU’s consistent support for reforms underway in Armenia and expressed the government’s readiness to enter a new, more effective phase of cooperation,” the Armenian government press office said.
Costa and von der Leyen welcomed Armenia’s adoption of a law initiating the EU accession process, calling it an important step. They also emphasized the need to accelerate talks on visa liberalization and welcomed the agreement on a draft peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan. EU officials reiterated their commitment to supporting the peace process and long-term regional stability.
The law initiating Armenia’s EU accession was signed by President Vahagn Khachaturyan on April 4. Pashinyan earlier noted that the decision to join the EU would ultimately require a public referendum.
