TAP: Azerbaijani gas strengthens EU energy security

More than 47 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas have been delivered to Europe over 4.5 years via the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC) and its European section, the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), Luca Schieppati, Managing Director of TAP, said on Wednesday at the Baku Energy Forum.
Of the total volume, 39 billion cubic meters were supplied to Italy, he added.
“We have made a significant contribution to diversifying gas sources, which is a priority for the EU. Azerbaijani gas enhances market liquidity and helps reduce electricity costs for industries and households,” Schieppati said.
He noted that Azerbaijani gas is currently supplied to 45 European companies, and the EU relies on the stable and uninterrupted deliveries from Azerbaijan.
Schieppati added that from January 2026, gas exports from the Shah Deniz field to Europe will increase by 1–1.2 billion cubic meters annually, with most of the volume destined for Italy.
He emphasized that the TAP and SGC infrastructure meets high engineering and construction standards. In Albania, TAP operates a fiber-optic monitoring system for real-time tracking of geologically risky areas, and a seismic monitoring system for managing earthquake risks. The pipeline’s condition is assessed using artificial intelligence, drones, and satellite imagery.
“All these technologies and innovations ensure the daily reliability of an asset like TAP,” he said.
The EU has been receiving gas from Azerbaijan since December 31, 2020.
