Dagestan leader calls for calm amid Azerbaijan-Russia tensions

The head of Russia’s Dagestan Republic, Sergey Melikov, has called for a peaceful and respectful resolution to recent tensions between Azerbaijan and Russia, urging both sides to avoid escalation.
“Difficulties in the relationship between Russia and Azerbaijan can be resolved peacefully, with mutual respect and consideration for both sides’ interests,” Melikov wrote Saturday on his Telegram channel.
He emphasized the strong cultural and historical ties between the peoples of Dagestan and Azerbaijan. “Many Azerbaijanis live in our region, and these ties go beyond geography — they are rooted in history, kinship, culture, and shared life,” Melikov said, noting that Azerbaijanis are considered an indigenous population in Dagestan.
Melikov warned that attempts to provoke conflict between the two countries are being made by those who seek to undermine peace and stability in the region.
“Foreign actors have repeatedly tried to destabilize the situation through proxies, but their efforts have failed,” he said.
“I appeal to everyone – to Dagestanis and our Azerbaijani brothers – do not give in to provocation, do not surrender to emotion, and do not descend into everyday nationalism,” Melikov added.
