Azerbaijan will start exporting natural gas to Syria through Turkey on August 2, Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said on Wednesday.

“On Saturday, August 2, we will start exporting Azerbaijani gas to Aleppo via Kilis,” Bayraktar told Anadolu Agency.

In the first phase, up to 1.2 billion cubic meters of gas will be supplied annually. The gas will be used primarily at power plants in Syria’s Aleppo and Homs provinces to help rebuild the war-damaged energy infrastructure.

Deliveries will be made via a pipeline stretching from the Turkish city of Kilis to the Syrian border. Turkey has completed its part of the pipeline, while Syria has finalized technical connections.
