CIS expects Azerbaijan and Armenia to engage more actively

CIS expects Azerbaijan and Armenia to engage more actively

The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) hopes that the documents signed in Washington between Azerbaijan and Armenia will serve as a basis for a peace agreement, CIS Secretary-General Sergey Lebedev said.

He noted that the signing of the joint declaration was welcomed across CIS countries, similar to the border agreement once signed between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

“We believe this is one of the stages on the path to resolving differences and concluding a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia,” Lebedev said ahead of a meeting of the CIS Council of Permanent Representatives.

According to him, a peace deal would allow CIS high-level meetings to be held more fully on the territories of the two republics. “I hope these republics can more actively participate in the activities of the Commonwealth,” he added.
