Azerbaijan says foiled terror attempt in Khankendi, suspect detained

Azerbaijani police detained a local resident of Armenian origin, Karen Avanesyan, in the city of Khankendi after he allegedly attempted an armed attack, the Interior Ministry said on Sunday.
According to the ministry, Avanesyan retrieved a hidden Kalashnikov rifle, ammunition and five grenades from a nearby forest before approaching a public event. Police said he resisted arrest, firing his weapon and throwing three grenades. He was wounded by return fire and detained. One police officer was also injured.
The ministry said an investigation had been launched together with the Prosecutor General’s Office and the State Security Service.
