Azerbaijan and Georgia to skip Euronest session in Yerevan
Azerbaijan’s delegation to the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly will not attend its 12th plenary session scheduled for Oct. 28–30 in Yerevan, delegation head Tahir Mirkishili said on Sunday.
He said statements and documents issued by the European Parliament, which make up half of Euronest’s activities, contradict Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“These statements also fail to support the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, instead serving the interests of those who seek to prolong hostility in the region,” Mirkishili said, adding that the decision was not related to the event being held in Armenia.
Earlier, Georgia also announced it would not send a delegation to the Yerevan session. Georgian lawmaker Levan Makhashvili said in an open letter to Euronest leadership that participation of some European Parliament members in protests in Tbilisi undermined mutual respect and encouraged radical political behaviour.
