U.S. congressman introduces bill to withdraw the United States from NATO
Republican congressman Thomas Massie has introduced a bill in the House of Representatives calling for the United States to withdraw from NATO.
Massie described the alliance as “a relic of the Cold War” and argued that U.S. funds should be spent on defending America rather than “socialist countries”.
He said NATO was created to counter the Soviet Union, which collapsed more than 30 years ago, yet U.S. membership has cost taxpayers trillions of dollars and continues to expose the country to foreign conflicts.
The bill requires the U.S. president to formally notify NATO of withdrawal under Article 13 of the treaty and prohibits the use of federal funds to support the alliance’s institutions.
