Trump to sue BBC over alleged misrepresentation of remarks
U.S. President Donald Trump said he plans to file a lawsuit against Britain’s public broadcaster BBC, accusing it of attributing to him remarks he says he never made.
“I am suing the BBC for putting words in my mouth that I did not say… either this evening or tomorrow morning,” Trump said during an event at the White House.
Trump said the broadcaster distorted his comments related to the January 6, 2021 events. “I think they used AI or something like that,” he added, without providing evidence.
Trump’s lawyers have previously said the lawsuit could seek damages of around $1 billion.
According to The Daily Telegraph, a BBC Panorama programme aired in October 2024 edited Trump’s speech in a way that appeared to suggest he was calling for the storming of the U.S. Congress.
The newspaper reported that the programme combined excerpts from different parts of Trump’s speech, delivered nearly an hour apart, into a single clip.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt accused the BBC of spreading disinformation.
Following The Daily Telegraph report, BBC Director-General Tim Davie and BBC News chief Deborah Turness resigned.
