European powers reject Trump’s Greenland ambitions, citing NATO unity and sovereignty

European powers issued a forceful joint rebuke to Washington on Tuesday, rejecting President Donald Trump's renewed calls for a U.S. takeover of Greenland as a threat to international law and NATO unity.

The leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom joined Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in a statement reaffirming that the mineral-rich Arctic island "belongs to its people".

The declaration follows White House comments suggesting military force remains "an option" for acquiring the territory.

European leaders emphasized that Arctic security must be achieved collectively within NATO, citing the 1951 defense agreement between the U.S. and Denmark as the proper framework for cooperation.

Frederiksen warned that any military move against a NATO ally would effectively end the alliance.
