Iran prepares execution of first protester — rights groups
Iran is preparing to execute the first participant in the current wave of protests, human rights groups including Norway-based Iran Human Rights said, citing sources.
The man, identified as Erfan Soltani, 26, has been charged with “waging war against God” for taking part in demonstrations. According to the reports, his execution could take place on January 14, just six days after his arrest, Radio Azattyk reported.
Iran’s Prosecutor General Mohammad Movahedi Azad previously said that any protester would be considered an “enemy of God,” an offence punishable by death under Iranian law. Iranian authorities have not officially commented on Soltani’s case.
Iranian news agency Tasnim, which is close to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, reported that Iran’s justice ministry has brought initial charges against several protesters.
According to Reuters, more than 2,000 people have been killed during the protests, while opposition outlet Iran International estimates the death toll at 12,000. Rights groups say more than 10,000 people have been arrested.
