Aliyev says decision to halt war was joint move by Azerbaijan and Armenia
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said the decision to stop hostilities and move toward peace was taken jointly by the leaderships of Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Speaking at a panel on “Shaping Eurasia’s Economic Identity” at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Aliyev said Azerbaijan could have continued fighting but warned that doing so would have led to endless wars and greater suffering.
He said the process moved rapidly from a major military clash in September 2023 to the signing of a joint declaration in August 2025 by the Azerbaijani president and Armenia’s prime minister.
The peace agreement was initialled in the presence of U.S. President Donald Trump, who signed the declaration as a witness, Aliyev added.
