Trump says U.S. will not bankroll NATO, urges allies to spend more
U.S. President Donald Trump renewed his criticism of NATO, saying the United States would not continue to shoulder what he described as an unfair financial burden and calling on member states to raise defence spending to 5% of GDP.
“I’ve done more for NATO than anyone,” Trump said, citing his role in strengthening the alliance during his first and second terms in office.
Trump also questioned whether European allies would come to Washington’s aid if needed, arguing that while the United States would honour its commitments, reciprocity from allies was uncertain.
His remarks come amid heightened diplomatic tensions with Denmark, following Trump’s comments on Greenland, which he has described as a U.S. national security priority.
