China spied for years on aides to UK prime ministers – Telegraph

China conducted long-term surveillance of mobile phones belonging to aides of British prime ministers, the Telegraph newspaper reported, citing sources.

According to the report, hackers allegedly backed by Beijing monitored the devices of aides to former prime ministers Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak between 2021 and 2024. The newspaper said it was unclear whether the phones of the prime ministers themselves were compromised.

U.S. intelligence sources told the Telegraph that China’s surveillance operation targeting senior UK officials is ongoing, raising concerns that Prime Minister Keir Starmer and his advisers may also have been affected.

Even without access to call content, hackers may have obtained metadata showing who officials contacted and when, the report said.
