Germany Transports 18 Bison to Azerbaijan for Reintroduction Project
In a collaborative effort to bolster biodiversity, 18 European bison have been sent from Germany to Azerbaijan as part of a long-term reintroduction program. The shipment includes 12 bison from Berlin’s Tierpark zoo and six from the German town of Bad Berleburg.
The project, initiated by Leyla Aliyeva and spearheaded by the IDEA Public Union in partnership with Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), aims to restore the bison population to its natural habitat. Azerbaijani Ambassador to Germany Nasimi Aghayev, who observed the process alongside Tierpark director Andreas Knierim, highlighted the successful partnership between the two nations since 2019.
The bison were transported via Frankfurt to Azerbaijan, where they will undergo a period of acclimatization in enclosures before being released into the wild.
