Pezeshkian orders preparations for "fair negotiations" with U.S.
On February 3, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced on X that he has instructed his Foreign Minister to pursue "fair and equitable negotiations" with the United States. Pezeshkian noted that the decision follows appeals from regional partners and is contingent on an atmosphere "free from threats and unreasonable expectations."
Key points from senior advisor Ali Shamkhani’s interview with Al-Mayadeen:
Uranium Enrichment: Iran is willing to reduce enrichment from 60% to 20% in exchange for concessions but refuses to ship its nuclear stockpile abroad.
Direct Dialogue: Tehran plans to negotiate only with Washington, claiming Europe has proven "incapable of fulfilling its commitments."
Istanbul Summit: Reports suggest a meeting between U.S. Envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian FM Abbas Araghchi could take place in Istanbul on February 6.
President Donald Trump confirmed ongoing discussions but maintained a "maximum pressure" stance, deploying a naval strike group to the region and warning of severe military consequences if a deal that satisfies U.S. interests is not reached.
