Azerbaijan’s State Security Service probes alleged plot to seize power
Azerbaijan’s State Security Service (SSS) said it is investigating a criminal case involving alleged actions aimed at the violent seizure of power and the forcible change of the constitutional order.
The agency said suspicions have been raised against former presidential administration head Ramiz Mehdiyev, businessman Abbas Abbasov, Popular Front Party chairman Ali Kerimli, and others.
According to investigators, members of the so-called “Union of Azerbaijani Organisations of Russia,” including Rustam Ibragimbekov, allegedly conspired in 2013 to change the government with support from foreign intelligence services.
The SSS said it is also examining alleged financing of unrest, the July 2020 events, and contacts with foreign entities in 2025.
Mehdiyev faces charges including violent seizure of power, treason, and money laundering. Several suspects have been placed on a wanted list and remanded in absentia.
The investigation is ongoing.
