The UK government could ban social media access for children under 16 from 2026, according to The Times, citing government sources.

A source told the newspaper that under powers announced by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the measure could form part of efforts to reinforce his position, restricting children’s access to social networks starting this year.

The Times reported that following public consultations, the restrictions could come into effect in summer. The measures are expected to cover not only social networks but also chatbots. Additionally, the Cabinet plans to compel internet platforms to limit the time underage users spend on services with “infinite scroll” features.

The newspaper said the government will urgently begin work to amend the Online Safety Bill, aiming to close legal loopholes and ensure all AI-powered chatbot providers comply with existing requirements to prevent access to illegal content.
