The United States has the firepower to carry out sustained military strikes against Iran for weeks rather than conduct a one-off operation, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing officials.

According to the report, Washington is deploying its largest air grouping to the Middle East since the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

The deployment reportedly includes advanced fighter jets such as the F-35 Lightning II and the F-22 Raptor.

U.S. officials have not publicly confirmed details of the reported buildup. The developments come amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran.
