Footballers are not always known for their generosity, but Mesut Ozil showed his caring side by donating money to pay the cost of operations for 11 Brazilian children.

The Arsenal midfielder's foundation will fund operations for the children whose families otherwise could not afford to pay for necessary treatment.

Labelled 'Ozil's Eleven', the children will undergo operations between the October 24 and November 7 in Maranhao in co-operation with the children's aid programme BigShoe.

It is not the first time that Ozil has shown a remarkable act of kindness, as he was presented with the Laureus Sport for Good award last November after spending his World Cup bonus on operations for 23 children in Brazil.

The award was presented to him as he made his first appearance as an ambassador for the Brazilian aid programme.

He said previously that the idea came about after Germany won the tournament because they had 23 excellent players in the squad.

The operations last year were a success, and Ozil says he wants to continue making a difference, having promised it was the beginning of further projects.

The 26-year-old has made a difference on the pitch with some excellent performances for the Gunners since joining from Real Madrid in 2013, and now he wants to continue making an impact away from football.

'Even one year after we won the World Cup, I want to continue to leave a positive mark in Brazil by financing 11 more children's operations,' he said.

'For me it's very important that I carry on providing help for the children of Brazil.'
