Man United target Sergio Ramos named Real Madrid captain
Manchester United have suffered a blow in their pursuit of Sergio Ramos, who has been named Real Madrid captain, according to reports.
Spanish daily Marca claim that Ramos has been handed the armband following the departure of long-standing captain Iker Casillas, who will join Porto. The news is yet to be confirmed by Real Madrid, but Ramos, the club’s vice-captain last season, is one of the more senior figures at the Santiago Bernabeu and is expected to take charge of the dressing room. Louis van Gaal’s United have been linked with a move for the World Cup-winning Spaniard all summer, with reports suggesting that Ramos had asked to leave the Spanish capital in favour of a move to Old Trafford. Ramos was apparently unhappy with club president Florentino Perez after failing to be offered better terms on a new contract
However, the club have repeatedly claimed that the 29-year-old is not for sale and the centre-back has been named in Rafael Benitez’s squad that travelled to Australia and China for the pre-season tour. Real Madrid are still thought to be interested in signing David De Gea as a replacement for Casillas, but any potential deal could see Ramos move the other way.
