Manchester United slammed for 'sexist' women's replica shirt

Manchester United slammed for 'sexist' women's replica shirt
03.08.2015 20:00
Manchester United have been accused of sexism after releasing women's replica football shirts with a plunging neckline.

The neckline on the new shirts - made by Adidas - is noticeably lower than the men's shirt and is different in style to last year's kit, which was made by Nike.

Just a day after the shirt's release for the new season, the football club has been slammed on Twitter for the 'sexist' kit.

Manchester United, who do not have a women's team like most of their Premier League rivals, recently landed a £750million deal with kit manufacturers Adidas after 13 years of being sponsored by Nike.

Supporters from both sides of the Manchester footballing divide said they considered the shirt, which costs £55, to be sexist.

Manchester City fan Anna Kappa tweeted: 'First @ManUtd can't be bothered to have an adult women's team & now the #sexist women's shirt!'

A United support called Helin added: 'Seriously @Adidas?! why is the V neck so low compared with mens one? Some of us don't like to show cleavage.'

Lucy Morris added: 'This is a disgrace. Women can't even wear normal looking football shirts these days? FML. Looks nothing like the men's.'

Roy Aurstad wrote: 'womens kit was both horrendous and sexist. Shame since they did a great job on the mens kit.'

But some fans were less worried by the change in style, with Andrea Ryder tweeting: 'Personally, I really like the shape of the Man Utd women's shirt... #justmethen'

Last year's women's replica shirt did not have a lower neckline than the men's shirt.

Manchester United and Adidas have been contacted for comment.
