SOCAR denies reports of oil spill in Caspian after rig fire

Azerbaijan’s state energy company SOCAR has dismissed reports of an oil spill in the Caspian Sea due to a rig fire that is still blazing some 110 km off the Baku coast.

Monitoring of the site of the accident by a group that also includes experts from the British energy giant BP revealed no sign of oil spill as of Dec. 16, SOCAR said in a statement on its website.

The results of the monitoring were also confirmed by satellite images taken by Azerspace and Canada’s Radarsat-2, the company said.

An oil worker was killed and 29 others were missing after a platform at the Guneshli oilfield caught fire on Dec. 4. The bodies of six of the missing were later recovered from the sea.

The search for the remaining workers is still continuing.
