Spectacular photos capture rare 'firefall' phenomenon

The stunning snaps taken on Tuesday (February 16) show the setting sun bathe Yosemite Horsetail Fall waterfall in California, US, creating a breathtaking orange glow from the reflection.

The eerie "lava" in the images are actually just water pouring over the side of the 2,000ft-high abyss.

The beautiful phenomenon only happens for a few days each year in mid to late February and amateur and professional snappers from across the glove have rushed to California to take some shots.

And the amazing snaps have wowed social media.

One Instagram user pointed out: "It actually looks like a river of fire. It's incredible."

While Trev916 shared: "That is so unreal!! Nice pic."

Ed.budd added: "Awesome image… Gorgeous shot."

In 1973, a photographer captured the first known picture of the natural firefall at the waterfall.

Since then, thousands have flocked to Horsetail Fall every February to take snaps of the spectacular glow.
