The world's focus is rightly on Isis. But the Syrian regime kills more civilians

Isis and the world's response to it has dominated the UN general assembly in New York this week.

World leaders have been unable to agree on a coordinated strategy to taking on the so-called Islamic State, with the US building an international coalition but Russia and Iran pushing the regime of Bashar al-Assad as the only hope of defeating Isis.

But figures suggest that the Syrian regime, blamed for indiscriminate use of barrel bombs upon civilian areas, is killing more people in its own country than Isis.

Speaking before arriving in New York, UK prime minister David Cameron said:

Assad can't be part of Syria's future. He has butchered his own people. He has helped create this conflict and this migration crisis. He is one of the great recruiting sergeants for [Isis].

He can't play a part in the future of Syria and that position hasn't changed.
