Turkish parliament to vote on Sweden's NATO membership in 2024
28.12.2023 11:00
The Foreign Affairs Committee of the Turkish Parliament approved Sweden's bid to join NATO on Tuesday, TRT Haber television said.

The next step is a vote in the parliament's general assembly, where Recep Tayyip Erdogan's party holds a majority. It is also expected to pass there in a vote that could be held within weeks.

The Turkish parliament is due to adjourn for a winter recess on Friday. It is still unknown whether the vote will take place this year or next month, tentatively after January 16, when the winter recess ends.

Commission head Fuat Oktay played down expectations for a speedy vote in the general assembly, telling reporters in parliament that the parliament speaker would decide on timing.
