Two PKK members arrested for Baku mosque attack

Azerbaijan’s Ministry of National Security (MTN) says it arrested two members of the Kurdistan Workers Party, known as PKK, who attempted to set fire to a mosque in Baku’s Qaracuxur area last month.

Nasibov Namiq Kamil oglu and Alakbarov Elnur Tahir oglu, both Azerbaijani nationals, were arrested in Baku’s Bilacari district in an anti-terrorist operation, the ministry said in a statement on December 1.

They were found in possession of weapons and were remanded in custody on terrorism charges.

One of them, Namiq Nasibov, visited Syria's northern town of Kobane in August to fight with local Kurdish militia against the Islamic State terrorist group. Upon his return to Azerbaijan, he set up a local organization of the PKK, MTN said.

No-one was injured when the Qaracuxur mosque was set alight in the early hours of Nov. 26. The fire was put out quickly and didn’t cause major damage.

Qaracuxur is one of a few mosques where Salafi Muslims come together to pray. It has both Sunni and Shiite imams appointed by the Board of Muslims of the Caucasus.
