The House Ethics Committee announced Friday that it had cleared 10 lawmakers and 32 House employees of any wrongdoing associated with a trip they took in May 2013 to Azerbaijan, even though investigators found inconclusive evidence suggesting that the approximately $200,000 worth of airfare and other bills were improperly paid for by the Azerbaijani government.
Six lawmakers were ordered to return rugs and other gifts they received during the trip. And the investigators urged the Department of Justice to examine "possible criminal" efforts to mislead the lawmakers about who actually paid for the travel.
