Working group on Caspian status to meet in Ashgabat in January

The next meeting of the ad hoc working group on the legal status of the Caspian Sea will be held in the Turkmen capital in January 2016, Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov told a year-end press conference on Friday.

"The ad hoc group continues talks at the level of deputy foreign ministers of the Caspian states, regarding the draft Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea. The next, 43rd meeting of the ad hoc working group is due to be held in Ashgabat in January next year. Despite the parties having narrowed their differences, they still differ in their opinions on a number of important issues," the minister said.

The decisions made at the summits of the Caspian heads of state in Baku and Astrakhan made their contribution to the reaching of agreement on a number of crucial points of the draft Convention, he said.

The next Caspian summit is due to be held in Astana, he said.

Kazakhstan has set the goal of adopting the Convention, he said.
