Another reason NOT to go to Bali

Another reason NOT to go to Bali
18.09.2015 13:00
With its warm weather, booze, and cheap hotels, Bali has always been a holiday favourite for Australians.

But would the tourist hotspot have the same appeal if you knew that Balinese police could raid your hotel and send you to jail for sleeping next to your partner on a romantic getaway?

The Indonesian government are currently reviewing the country's Criminal Code and under new proposed laws it would be a crime to co-habitate out of wedlock, according to local reports.

The crime would carry a one-year-jail term and would be applicable to locals and tourists alike.

The revised Criminal Code - which needs to pass through the Indonesian House of Representatives before it becomes law - outlines the differing sentences for an array of crimes from petty theft to murder however, its most recent reincarnation comes with several laws regulating morality, The Jakarta Globe reported.

If the new laws are passed adulterers will face five years in jail instead the current nine month sentence, with those accused of employing witchcraft or black magic also looking at five years behind bars.

Under the proposed changes, a formal ban would be placed on the open sale of contraceptives.

This means shopkeepers would be unable to display contraceptives, like condoms, on the shelf and may only sell them if they have been specifically requested by the customer.

There has been a mixed response to the controversial new 'morality' sanctions, with some claiming it could drive away tourists and cripple the Indonesian economy.

Sandrayati Moniaga, a member of Indonesia's National Commission on Human Rights, said the proposed regulations would interfere with an individuals right to privacy, according to The Jakarta Globe.

'Adultery and cohabiting are personal problems,' Sandrayati said. 'It's none of the government's business, it's the person's business with God. The state should not intervene in personal rights.'

Her colleague Dianto Bachriadi, another member of the Commission, said the 'counter-productive' laws would encourage police to target tourists which could lead to a decline in travel activity, The Courier Mail reported.

'It will make tourists run away. Police will actively raid hotels … And it will cause fear for all people. It will negatively affect the economy and all other things. Moreover it is an issue of privacy,' he said.

Khatibul Umam Wiranu, a lawmaker in the House of Representative's, welcomed a punishment for premarital cohabitation, which is frowned upon but not illegal in Indonesia.

He said morality issues such as adultery were the 'beginning of many social problems' in Indonesia and that there should be harsher penalties to 'deter' offenders.
