Fears Brit jihadis will pose as holidaymakers to join ISIS

Fears Brit jihadis will pose as holidaymakers to join ISIS

Millions will escape the UK this half-term for a break in the sun and a leading Islamic State militant has urged fanatics to join tourists on flights to the Greek islands.

Former Morrison’s security guard Omar Hussain – one of the regime’s top recruiters of Western fighters – has warned that the usual routes via Turkey are now attracting too much attention.

The jihadi – now living in Syria - wrote online: "For brothers and sisters wanting to make hijrah to Sham never buy a one-way ticket or tell your relatives your plans.

"Try going through Greece and the Greek islands to reach Sham.

"There is much security going straight to Turkey and there is a good chance you will be stopped at the airport."

Islands like Kos, Lesbos and Rhodes – suffering an influx of refugees escaping the war in the Middle East – have boat trips to places like Bodrum in Turkey.

Visitors do not need a visa for the day trip and could easily travel on to Syria after landing with other tourists.

Several Brit families – including two from Bradford this year – have made the journey to join ISIS through Turkey.

Another tactic is would-be jihadi fighters booking tickets on cruise ships and sailing to war in five star luxury.

The terrorists are now getting off ships at Turkish coastal towns like Bodrum and Izmit and travelling overland to the border with Syria.

Pierre St. Hilaire, director of counterterrorism at Interpol, said: "Because they know the airports are monitored more closely now there's a use of cruise ships to travel to those areas."

On Wednesday a former Islamic State member claimed several Germans are fighting as part of the terror network's enforcement unit responsible for torturing and murdering enemies and deserters.

Nils D, who faces trial in Düsseldorf in January, has told the authorities he helped capture 'dissidents' on behalf of the group while he was in Syria for 13 months.

The 25-year-old claimed German ISIS recruits were active members of the assault squad who always wore masks and were rewarded with higher pay and bonuses, including looted trophies from the Iraqi city of Mosul.

He was allegedly a member of the unit for eight months, although he denied having taken part in killings or torture.

It comes as elite US special forces carried out a daring raid on an ISIS prison in northern Iraq.

As many as 70 hostages were understood to have been freed after the operation.

The Pentagon has confirmed more than 20 Iraqi security forces were freed as part of the op.
