Paris attacks: The investigation so far

Paris attacks: The investigation so far
17.11.2015 17:30
As French investigators examine the events of Friday night, what do we know about their findings to date?

How many attackers were there?

Seven gunmen died in the course of the attacks, according to Paris prosecutor Francois Molins.

The attackers appear to have worked in "three co-ordinated teams" using the same type of assault rifles, and wearing the same type of suicide vests, Mr Molins said.

Three attackers blew themselves up outside the Stade de France, north of Paris

One attacker died after detonating his bombs at the restaurant Le Comptoir Voltaire on the Boulevard Voltaire

Three men wearing suicide vests were involved in the deadliest attack of the night, at the Bataclan concert venue, in which 89 people were killed.
Two of the gunmen died after detonating their vests, the third was shot by police

What we know so far

What do we know about the dead attackers?

Bataclan:

The first name to be released by French officials was that of 29-year-old Frenchman Omar Ismail Mostefai. He was identified after his finger was found at the Bataclan and matched fingerprints the police had on file

Samy Amimour, a 28-year-old Frenchman

One other attacker

Stade de France:

Bilal Hadfi, a 20-year-old French national who lived in Brussels

A man who travelled to Europe via Greece using a Syrian passport in the name of Ahmad al-Mohammed, though that may not be his real identity

One other dead suicide bomber

Bars and restaurants:

Investigators know the least about this "team", who strafed the bars and restaurants of the 10th and 11th arrondissements with gunfire. Witnesses reported seeing gunmen firing from a black Seat car

Brahim Abdeslam, 31, a Frenchman living in Brussels, blew himself up near where the gun attacks occurred, but it is not clear whether he was in the Seat. He is believed to have hired the Seat in Belgium

Who were the attackers?

Did any of the attackers survive and get away?

The discovery of the black Seat used in the gun attacks on the bars and restaurants - found abandoned in an eastern suburb of Paris with weapons inside on Sunday - together with the existence of just one body of an attacker who could possibly have been in the car (Brahim Abdeslam) could suggest that one or more attackers escaped alive.

French police issued an alert for 26-year-old Salah Abdeslam, brother of Brahim Abdeslam, but it is not clear whether they believe he was in the Seat or perhaps an accomplice to the crimes.

He hired - in Belgium - a Volkswagen Polo which was found outside the Bataclan.
