Presidential elections in Turkiye may be held one month earlier

Presidential elections in Turkiye may be held one month earlier
22.06.2022 15:30
Turkiye’s presidential election scheduled for June 2023 may take place a month earlier, reported from TGRT channel, citing sources in the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) led by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The AKP proposes to hold elections not on June 18, as provided by the current legislation, but on May 14, motivating this by the possibility of a second round of voting, which, according to the initial deadlines, will take place in July and may take place with a low voter turnout due to the start of the holiday season. On the other hand, the timing of the planned elections coincides with the exams at universities, which can also negatively affect the turnout and the outcome of the vote.

Earlier, the incumbent president and representatives of the AKP said that the elections would take place as scheduled - June 18, 2023.

The People’s Alliance, which brings together the AKP and the far-right Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), previously nominated Erdogan as a single presidential candidate. The Turkish leader has repeatedly urged the opposition to name its presidential candidate, but its representatives say they will do so when they see fit.
