The number of COVID-19 cases in Kazakhstan increased 2.5 times in January compared to December 2023, Chief Sanitary Doctor Aizhan Esmagambetova said, reported from Kazakhstani media.
"This is an increase from 200 to 500 cases. We see an increase in incidence, mainly in Astana and Almaty – these are 143 and 74 cases," said Esmagambetova.
155 COVID-19 cases were registered this week, or 26 cases more than in the previous week. According to the chief sanitary doctor, the increase in the incidence coincides with the increase in ARVI and influenza incidence, the level of which grew by 7%.
The Omicron strain, which is characterized by a mild course, is currently circulating.
"Today only three patients are receiving treatment in the hospital. All others are undergoing outpatient treatment," the doctor noted.
In order to prevent the spread of infection, the country has introduced a mask regime in public places. The corresponding decree was signed by the country's chief sanitary doctor.
"Heads of health departments of the regions, the cities of Almaty, Astana, Shymkent, as well as territorial departments of the Sanitary and Epidemiological Control Committee, should ensure the use of medical masks in public organizations and the availability of antiseptics," the document says.
