Tehran faces water crisis as main reservoir could run dry in two weeks — officials
Tehran’s main source of drinking water could run dry within two weeks due to an unprecedented drought, Iranian officials warned on Sunday.
Behzad Parsa, director of Tehran’s water utility, said the Amir Kabir Dam — one of five supplying the capital — currently holds just 14 million cubic meters of water, or 8% of its full capacity. A year ago, the figure stood at 86 million.
“With current reserves, the capital can only last two more weeks,” Parsa told the state news agency IRNA, adding that rainfall in the Tehran region has dropped by 100% this year.
Iranian media reported the capital consumes about 3 million cubic meters of water per day. Water cuts have already begun in some neighborhoods.
