112 dead seals found on Caspian coast in Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan’s Ecology Department in the Mangystau region reported finding 112 dead Caspian seals along the coastline between the villages of Asan and Cape Bautino in the Tupkaragan district.
Water samples were collected from the site to determine the cause of death. Officials noted that mass seal deaths in the Caspian Sea have occurred before.
In 2024, investigations cited highly pathogenic avian flu, neuroviral infection linked to immune deficiency, and suffocation caused by natural gas emissions from the seabed as possible causes.
