Finland’s president suggests informal talks could help ease Greenland dispute

Finnish President Alexander Stubb said an informal approach, including a sauna visit with U.S. President Donald Trump, could help find common ground on the issue of Greenland.

Speaking to The Washington Post, Stubb said traditional diplomatic methods do not always work in complex situations and that changing the format of engagement can sometimes help unlock compromise.

“Sometimes it’s better to slow down — go to a sauna, take a good bath, and then find a solution. If we could persuade President Trump to go to a sauna, I think we might achieve something. From golf diplomacy to sauna diplomacy. Why not?” Stubb said.

He added that he hoped discussions on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos would help move forward efforts to resolve what he described as a “complex situation” surrounding Greenland, including through more informal dialogue between leaders.
