U.S. to limit foreign students’ stay to four years
17.07.2026 14:00

U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration has announced new rules limiting the stay of foreign students and exchange visitors in the country to four years.

The new regulations will replace the current “duration of status” system, which allows holders of F-1 student visas and J-1 exchange visas to remain in the United States until they complete their studies or exchange programmes. Students needing more than four years will have to apply for an extension.

The rules also restrict students’ ability to change academic programmes or transfer to another university without additional approval. The grace period for leaving the United States after graduation will be reduced from 60 days to 30 days.

The Department of Homeland Security said the changes are intended to prevent abuse of the visa system and strengthen oversight of foreign nationals.

The new rules will take effect 60 days after publication, subject to completion of the review process.
