US national debt surpasses historic $40 trillion mark, doubling since 2017
The total US national public debt has breached the $40 trillion threshold for the first time in history, doubling its volume compared to 2017 levels, global financial media reported.
Publicly held debt held by individuals, institutions, and foreign investors accounts for over $32.26 trillion, while intragovernmental holdings exceed $7.78 trillion. With the statutory debt ceiling set at $41.1 trillion, the current debt burden translates to approximately $116,500 per US resident.
