Caspian Sea to Deploy Higher-Capacity Container Ships for Middle Corridor in 2027
New high-capacity container vessels are slated for commissioning across the Caspian Sea in 2027 to scale up freight throughput along the Middle Corridor. Elmir Poladov, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Association of Freight Forwarding Companies of Azerbaijan, announced the plan during the Azerbaijan–European Union Business Forum in Baku.
He stated that while ferry and Ro-Ro operations currently run alongside small-capacity feeder ships, deploying larger container vessels is pivotal for expanding maritime haulage capacity.
Poladov highlighted parallel infrastructure upgrades, noting that the annual throughput capacity of the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway line has reached 5 million tonnes, alongside continued expansion at the Alat Port. He added that work is underway to launch a national single-window mechanism designed to integrate logistics procedures, ensuring seamless, cost-effective, and predictable cargo transit across the Middle Corridor.
