WHO warns of risk of new global pandemic
Outbreaks of infectious diseases are becoming more frequent and causing greater damage, according to a report by the Global Preparedness Monitoring Board.
Experts warned that investment in pandemic preparedness is not keeping pace with growing risks. They said geopolitical tensions and environmental crises are weakening the effectiveness of new initiatives.
The report also said the world has seen setbacks in access to diagnostics, vaccines and treatment following outbreaks from Ebola to COVID-19 and mpox.
WHO warned that a new pandemic could deepen global divisions and economic problems. Artificial intelligence and digital technologies could help improve threat monitoring, but without proper oversight they could also create new risks.
