One Azerbaijani, three Armenian soldiers killed near Karabakh

An Azerbaijani and three Armenian soldiers were killed in clashes near the separatist region of Nagorno-Karabakh on Thursday.

Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry said it lost a soldier in fighting with Armenians near the line of contact, without giving further details.

The "defense army” of Nagorno-Karabakh said two of its soldiers were killed in clashes with Azerbaijani troops in several sections of the frontline.

A third Armenian soldier died in "unclear circumstances,” it said.

Armenians seized nearly one-fifth of Azerbaijan’s internationally-recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh, in a war after the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991.

While major hostilities ended with a cease-fire in 1994, no peace agreement has been signed.

Armenia continues the occupation of the Azerbaijani territory in defiance of four UN Security Council resolutions calling for immediate and unconditional withdrawal.

The two country’s presidents are expected to meet in Bern on Saturday for talks.
