President Ilham Aliyev and his wife, Mehriban Aliyeva, visited an Aquatic Palace under construction in the capital, Baku, state news agency Azartac reported.

The palace will be one of the venues for the inaugural European Olympic Games to be held in the Azerbaijani capital next year.

Aliyev ordered in August 2012 to start construction of the Aquatic Palace. The building was designed by South Korea’s Securo Co. Ltd.

The minister of youth and sports, Azad Rahimov, briefed the president and the first lady about the construction work. He said that the palace complex will occupy 6 hectares of land.  It will fully meet the requirements of the International Swimming Federation.

The palace will have three swimming pools. The first one, 50 meters long and 25 meters wide, is designed for competitions. The second pool will be for training and the third for diving.

The palace will also have fitness rooms, a restaurant, a conference room and offices.
