Over 320 dead seals found on Caspian Sea coast
More than 320 dead seals have been discovered along the Caspian Sea shoreline, regional emergency services reported. The carcasses were found between the mouth of the Sulak River and the Terek River. A total of 322 bodies have been identified so far, but the number may increase.
Dagestan’s Ministry of Natural Resources confirmed receiving reports of a mass die-off and said specialists have begun on-site inspections of the coastline.
Officials noted that seal deaths are regularly recorded during migration periods. Scientists consider suffocation caused by passing through seabed natural gas release zones linked to seismic activity as the most likely cause.
