A new documentary about the Nagorno-Karabakh war tells the story of the crew of an infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) that killed infamous Armenian terrorist Monte Melkonian in June 1993.
The documentary, “The Crew of BMP 258” (BMP stands for infantry fighting vehicle in Russian), has been filmed with the help of the Nacaf Nacafov Foundation. The producer is Elcan Mammadov. Journalist Shahin Haciyev wrote the screen. Cameraman is Elman Nabiyev.
Melkonian led Armenian forces that attacked Azerbaijan’s Agdam District in June. His UAZ (Russian jeep) was spotted near the village of Marzili by the crew of the Azerbaijani IFV. They opened fire on the UAZ. Melkonian was fatally wounded in the head.
Two of the crew members, Shaiq Kalbaliyev and Asaf Mutallimov, were killed in fighting days later. Azaddun Musayev is the only member that survived the war.
Melkonian was an American-born Armenian who carried out terrorist attacks against Turkish diplomats in Europe in mid-1980s. He was later arrested and sent to prison in France. In 1989, he was released and in the following year, acquired a visa to travel to Armenia and joined the separatist war in Azerbaijan’s Nagorno-Karabakh region.
