Drone captures humpback whale spraying a RAINBOW from its blow hole

A humpback whale sprayed a rainbow from its blowhole in a mesmerising video posted online.

In the clip, the large marine mammal can be seen swimming through the ocean off the coast of Newport Beach in California.

A drone captures the footage of the whale as it hides itself under the water before coming up to break the surface.

It then fires water from its blowhole, which instantly turns to mist as it moves through the air.

Suddenly there's a remarkable sight, as the water particles pass through a beam of light and a perfect rainbow is formed.

The image momentarily remains in the air before the spray continues to pass through the beam and the rainbow is lost.
The video concludes with the whale submerging itself under the water once again.

Rainbows occur when sunlight and water combine in a specific way.

Sunlight is made up of a spectrum of colours, but we generally only see it as a white beam.

However, when this beam hits water at a certain angle, the different colours that make up the beam separate, which results in a rainbow.
