Georgian law enforcers have seized 2.79 tons of liquid heroin, the largest single haul of illicit drugs in the South Caucasus country, the interior ministry said on Friday.
The drugs, carried on a truck entering Georgia from Azerbaijan, were contained in 90 plastic barrels, it said.
The Georgian interior ministry said that the seized drugs had been meant for transit to other countries.
The previous largest single drug haul was recorded in July 2013, when 116 kilograms of heroin was found in a truck traveling from Armenia to Georgia.
Georgia has been used as a transit country by drug dealers and most illicit drugs originate from Afghanistan and Iran and these drugs travel to western Europe and Russia and Turkey.
