Ronda Rousey weighs in on mixed gender fights

As the current Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s bantamweight champion, it is often said that Ronda Rousey could easily step into the ring with men in the same sport.

But the MMA super star has revealed that she will never fight a man because she would never encourage any situation that allows a man to hit a woman.

Speaking on The Project in Australia on Tuesday evening, the blonde athlete explained: ‘I don’t think, as a professional sport, we can have situation where an entire stadium is cheering about a man hitting a woman’.

The 28-year-old is currently in Melbourne to promote her upcoming fight with boxing champion Holly Holm, which is taking place in Australia in November.

And she was quick to share her thoughts about those who have tried to discredit her chosen sport by arguing that it is too violent.

The Olympic medalist said: ‘If they think it’s just violent then it shows their ignorance to the sport.

‘They say the arm bar is such a terrible move, but when I did it at the Olympics I was called a hero.’

She continued: ‘But how come when I make money from it, I’m some barbarian? They have boxing and taekwondo, all types of striking in the Olympics, but how come when we make money it’s somehow violent?

‘It’s celebrated in one area and condemned in the other, it makes no sense.’

The respected fighter had nothing but praise for her opponent Holm when asked if she thought that Holly was crazy to fight her.

‘Well, no she’s a 19 times boxing world champion, undefeated, a really crazy chick with plenty of head kick knockouts. She’s the greatest challenge I’ve ever had’, Ronda answered.

In another interview with 3MMM Hot Breakfast on Wednesday morning, she revealed how she hopes to be inspiring women around the world.

She told the hosts: ‘I’m just trying to be the best in the world at what I do.

‘I think for too long it’s been put into women’s minds that they being strong is somehow not feminine and I try to be an example that that isn’t true.’

Speaking about her foray into acting, she said: 'I’m a lucky chick. I’m so excited, you have no idea. And it’s so cool that after I fight Holm, I’ll be going right off to film my first original script that I’ll be starring in with Mark Wahlberg.

'It’s a big step and a lot of responsibility to have a starring role but I’ll move up from my acting light belt to a heavyweight.'
